New Details Revealed About Fantastic Four: First Steps — Ultimate Nullifier, Silver Surfer, and More
Marvel fans, get ready — we’ve just received a wave of exciting new information about the upcoming Fantastic Four: First Steps film. With announcements straight from Marvel Studios and fresh insights from Silver Surfer actress Julia Garner, it’s clear this is going to be a landmark entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Here’s everything we know so far.
Marvel
Studios and Marvel Comics Team Up for the First Time
In
a historic move, Marvel Studios and Marvel Comics are collaborating on a new
comic book directly tied to the MCU’s Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Launching July 2, this one-shot comic will exist firmly within the world of the
upcoming movie — a first for Marvel. Written by Matt Fraction with art by Mark
Buckingham and cover art by Phil Noto, the comic will be presented as an
artifact from the world of the film itself, published by the Future Foundation.
This
tie-in comic isn’t just an extra collectible — it confirms a major detail about
the movie’s timeline. The Fantastic Four: First Steps film is
not an origin story.
Instead, it picks up four years after the team has already gained their powers
and established themselves as superheroes. When the film opens, the world
already knows who they are, and they’ve spent years saving the planet. This is
why, in the trailer’s scene where the team appears on "The Ted Gilbert
Show," the host casually mentions, “We all know the story.” The Fantastic
Four are already icons in their universe.
Confirmed Villains and Classic Comic Book Inspirations
The
comic’s cover art, modeled after the legendary Fantastic Four #1, offers even more
insight. While modernized — with Sue Storm in a protective shield and the team
in their iconic uniforms — it pays homage to their roots. Notably, the comic
confirms that the Fantastic Four will battle Giganto, a monstrous creature
linked to the villain Mole Man.
Leaked
photos have hinted at Mole Man’s presence, and with actor Paul Walter Hauser
cast in the film (though his role remains unconfirmed), it’s widely speculated that he will portray the iconic villain. This suggests the film will include
flashbacks to the team’s past battles, opening the door for cameos from other
classic super villains as well.
Set
in a retro-futuristic alternate
universe inspired by the 1960s, First Steps is shaping up to be a
visually distinctive and nostalgic experience. It’s also been confirmed that
although the film won’t be a traditional origin story, flashbacks will show how
the team gained their powers, as teased in the trailer where Reed Richards reflects
on their first journey into space.
Julia Garner’s Silver Surfer and the Ultimate Nullifier
Julia
Garner, who plays the Silver Surfer, has shared compelling insights in a recent
interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Garner is portraying Shalla-Bal, not a
gender-swapped version of Norin Radd, establishing her character as distinct
within the MCU. She spoke about immersing herself in the comics to nail the
Silver Surfer’s iconic poses and emphasized that both her character and the
film overall will feel very different from previous iterations.
With
the film’s retro-futuristic 1960s setting and a refreshed tone, Garner promises
audiences a “clean palette” — a welcome change given the mixed reception of
prior Fantastic Four
films.
Perhaps
most intriguingly, Garner revealed she shared the most screen time with Joseph Quinn,
who plays Johnny Storm (Human Torch). This hints at a significant partnership
between Silver Surfer and Human Torch, potentially tied to a pivotal plotline:
the retrieval of the Ultimate Nullifier.
In
the comics, the Ultimate Nullifier is a powerful weapon capable of erasing
anything from existence. Originally introduced during the Fantastic Four’s
battle against Galactus, Johnny Storm retrieves the device from Galactus’ ship
under the guidance of Uatu the Watcher. It’s speculated that in First Steps, the
Silver Surfer will fill a similar guiding role, directing Johnny to retrieve
the Nullifier to stop Galactus and save Earth.
The
trailer supports this theory, showing scenes of the team approaching a dying
planet and glimpses of the Silver Surfer on what could be Galactus’ ship or the
Elemental Converter — a device housed on the ship. The Nullifier, likewise, is
typically kept on Galactus’ vessel, the Taa II. If Reed Richards is seen
wielding an unfamiliar device while stretching toward Galactus in the trailer,
it’s highly likely this is the MCU’s version of the Ultimate Nullifier.
A Promising Future for the Fantastic Four
With
established heroes, flashbacks to past villains, a retro 1960s aesthetic, and
potential ties to the Ultimate Nullifier storyline, Fantastic Four: First Steps is
shaping up to be a thrilling and refreshing reboot for the iconic team. The
collaboration between Marvel Studios and Marvel Comics signals an unprecedented
level of synergy, promising both depth and authenticity to long-time fans and
newcomers alike.
